Bruce Obee

Bruce Obee is a fourth-generation Vancouver Islander. Following in thefootsteps of his grandfather and uncle, he began his writing career in1972 as a reporter for Victoria Times. After working in the newsbusiness for five years, Obee left a position as senior correspondentfor the Canadian Press bureau in Victoria. He then began a full-timefreelance career that he continues today, writing outdoor andenvironmental magazine articles, books, and television scripts.

Bruce’s experiences and achievements throughout his career are worthenvying. His articles and photographs have appeared in a variety ofmagazines including National Geographic, Canadian Geographic and Travel& Leisure. He has written several books, writes televisiondocumentaries for BC’s Knowledge Network, and is a contributing editorfor British Columbia Magazine. Bruce has also received a number ofinternational awards including the Governor General’s CommemorativeMedal for “significant contribution to compatriots, community and toCanada.”

Bruce seems to have found a career that fits well with his everydaylife. An avid cyclist, hiker, camper, and rower, he is very much anoutdoor enthusiast. Bruce and his wife, Janet Barwell-Clarke, live onSaanich Peninsula, near Victoria, on Vancouver Island. They have twogrown daughters, Nicole and Lauren
