Winter Grilling Arrives

One of our winter books arrived in the office a little while ago. That is exciting enough by itself, but this one was originally published in Germany. We bought the rights, had the text translated, and we’re releasing the English language version across North America.

The book is Winter Grilling, and it was originally written in German by Tom Heinzle. Tom is a competitive griller in Austria. Actually, he’s the leader of a competitive grill team. He makes a point of including wild herbs, game, and winter vegetables into his grilling.

While it’s exciting to bring something unique like this to the North American market, it presents unique challenges as well. For one thing, translation can only help you so much when you are presented with a recipe that calls for “alpine hay”. If you have questions, you need to have them translated into German, sent to the original publisher, and then have their answers translated before you can move on with the project.

After all that is said and done, though, it’s nice to think that a book created in Austria can have a special relationship with grill enthusiasts here in Canada, who may just have been keeping their eyes out for something a little different to tide them over in the long winter months.

Here’s a great recipe for chili pears, which would be an amazing accompaniment to anything you’ve got on the grill in these winter months.

Chili Pears

Ingredients:

1 Tbsp (15 mL) butter
4 pears, quatered and cored
2 medium chili peppers, finely chopped
salt, to taste

Melt butter in wok. Add pears and fry over high heat for about 5 minutes. Season to taste with chili peppers and salt.
